Moveis Princesa do oeste S.A., based in Pinhalzinho, Brazil, is a manufacturer of solid wood furniture. The company believes in loving nature and using wood, a precious raw material, intelligently. To achieve this valuable goal, sustainable production is therefore essential. The furniture manufacturer not only has its own reforestation area, but also places high demands on its supply chain, its machinery and, last but not least, its employees.

A new optimizing cross-cut line with automatic defect detection scanner from Paul will contribute its share to sustainable production in Brazil in the future. The compact and economical line consists of the Paul Wood Scanning System in combination with a cross-cut system of the C11 series. The system buffers the workpieces coming from a locally provided moulder and then feeds them to the Paul scanner. The scanner scans all four sides of the boards as they are passing through, detects undesired wood characteristics in a flash and calculates the best optimization result. These wood characteristics may include knots, cracks, pith, resin pockets, rot, wane or compacted workpiece zones. "Our scanner offers all the possibilities of a premium scanner at a very competitive and economical price" Manfred Buck, Sales Director at Paul, is convinced. "It also reliably detects numerous surface defects and dimensional deviations". This economical solution is made possible by a unique multi-sensor camera system, where one camera per board side detects all sensor data where other scanners require several cameras.

The C11 series cross-cut saw then performs the task of cutting out defects. For space and economic reasons, the cross-cut station is arranged in line with the scanner. An additional buffer was not necessary at this point, as the scanner transfers the optimization result quickly and promptly to the MAXI 8 control of the C11. This second-generation C11 is equipped with numerous new developments and long-proven functions from Paul. With a revised saw rocker and highly dynamic servo drives, the new generation achieves a significant performance increase in all relevant areas. With regard to timber feeding, the Paul Gap-Close function ensures a minimum distance between the workpieces and thus a continuous supply of material. The Paul Kick-Out function accelerates the cut workpieces out of the cross-cut saw as early as possible and transfers them to the sorting belt conveyor. No compromises were made on quality during development, and the manufacturer focuses on a smooth material flow, a high level of process reliability and precision during cutting. After the cutting process, a two-colour marking system marks the quality of the workpieces.

"Both the Paul Wood Scanning System and our redesigned C11 show their strengths to the full in this system," Manfred Buck is certain. "We have created a real power system here that will certainly generate a lot of enthusiasm and high added value for our customer in South America."
